While in Costa Rica last month we stumbled upon this small coffee plantation in Monteverde. We managed to join a tour and personally meet the plantation's namesake, Mr. Don Juan himself. Even though we were out of season it was a fascinating tour and at the end we had as much coffee as we could drink - which turned out to be about four cups for me.
The tour is quite popular and most hotels in the area can arrange it for you. The plantation is about a 5-10 minute drive from the main town area. Costs was about $20/person.
During the tour the guide kept reminding us that they're on the Internet now. This is a big deal for them. They only sell their coffee in Monteverde and online. They also only make a few thousand pounds of coffee per year - it's a small plantation
They claim it is some of the best coffee in the world. It indeed is very good. They currently live at www.donjuancoffeetour.com. They sell their coffee online and ship around the world. I recommend getting some.
