Geocaching is basically a treasure hunt for nerds with GPS devices.
"Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value." - Wikipedia article on Geocaching

Geeky fun - I like that! :)
Not only is it fun, it's educational and offers health benefits as well. Geocaching will bring you to places you've never been. There are several types of caches available including the tradional ones that you described, EarthCaches and virtual caches. EarthCaches teaches you interesting things about the Earth and virtuals are interesting places.
