Yesterday morning, as I do a few mornings a week, I walked up to the stop sign at the top of my street and waited for the 9:32am bus to downtown. It never came. Hmm.. So I walked further down the route and waited again. No bus. Strange. So I walked to work.
I did some research and discovered that Charlottetown transit has changed its routes. Not a problem, I’ll just look them up online. Well… the new schedule does not exist online yet – they still have their old schedule posted and link to Peter’s site which is where I discovered that I could go get a new schedule from a local drug store - which I did.
The new schedule is a disappointment. I lost my regular morning bus. I now either have to go to work at 7:30am (not happening) or walk 15 minutes to a bus stop. Total travel time including my walk is now 45 minutes when my office is only a 30 minute walk away.
While I’m sad to see my morning bus stop go that is not my main gripe with the new schedule. My chief complaint is that the schedule seems to be fantastically complex. We have gone from having four main lines to having many different loops, lines and hubs. To make things even more complex they have decided to place different bus numbers on different routes and vary the stops and routes based on the bus number. After hours of scrutinizing the schedule and map (which has no street names on it!!!) I am still quite confused.
Dear Charlottetown Transit – simplify, simplify, simplify.

The schedule is very random. Bus stops need to have a simple stop schedule posted because the next bus could be 5 hours, 5 minutes or not until the next day. I can see some very confused tourists this summer.

I've noticed one feature used by the Edmonton Transit Service is a unique ID number at each bus stop along with a phone number where you dial and punch in the bus stop ID to hear the next scheduled pick-up time at that location. Very handy for tourists or anyone else who prefers not to carry a bus schedule with them.
