Here on Margarita Island we've noticed that there seems to be somewhat of a musical time warp. At first we thought it was a taxi driver here, or a store there, but over the past two months we've noticed a trend: The North American music being listened to down here is 10-20 years old.
Artists we've heard more than one song by:
- Richard Marx
- Miami Sound Machine
- Phil Collins (think In the air tonight, none of that Tarzan crap)
- Queen
- Journey
- Rick Astley
- Bangles
- Cutting Crew
Most of our musical experiences have been in taxis and stores. We have also heard similar 80's style songs coming out of people's houses and cars. The pinnacle event of this 1.21 gigawatt flashback was with a young cab driver. He would have been not much older than 19 and had his car somewhat suped up with decals and the like. When Becky, Ben (Becky's brother), Jenn (Ben's Girlfriend), and I got into the cab the young driver pulled out his CD case. He flipped through it until he got to the one he was looking for. He held up the CD for us to see and gave the international head-nod for “this rocks”: It was Queens Greatest Hits. The five of us drove for the next 5 minutes and 55 seconds belting out Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs. It did indeed rock.

Spain was the same, old bad music and new bad music.
But everyone could outdance any musically up-to-date person I know, so perhaps there is a secret?

I just heard Rick Astley and Queen on 93.1's Saturday Morning '80s. The 80's flashback is everywhere.
