Twelve interesting things we've discovered about life on Margarita Island (and in Venezuela):
- Beer is cheaper than water (20 cents a can).
- Gas is cheaper than beer (4 cents a litre).
- Cheddar Cheese is non-existent. We've looked high and low and the closest we've come is Kraft singles.
- As it rains so little here drinking water is actually pumped to the island via huge underwater pipes.
- During the high season water is often rationed.
- Power goes out once or twice a week for 20 minutes or so
- Sunday is family day. The beaches are packed with families having BBQ's and good times.
- Dance music is still very popular. If we hear “rhythm of the night” one more time...
- Pastries & Deserts are very popular here. There are elegant pastry/desert sections in all of the supermarkets and most local stores. We're not talking bow-ties at Tim Hortons. Think desert at a fancy restaurant.
- We thought soccer/football would be the most popular sport here. It turns it's baseball followed by basketball. Soccer is a distant third.
- Fireworks/firecrackers are set off at all hours of the day for seemingly no reason. 7am, noon, 7:43 pm, doesn't matter when. We are on a quest to figure out why.
- Lemons here are green and taste like half lemon half lime. Coincidently they are called Limons in Spanish.
