Today a number of people warned me that gas prices were going to sky rocket tonight. From our current 1.13/L to over 2.00/L. As my tank was almost empty I decided to fill up. The gas stations had lines of cars waiting to get into them. I waited for over 30 minutes to fill up. Cars were literally lined up down the highway. Folks were filling their gas tanks and other gas containers in a desperate rush to avoid the price hike.
Well...the best part is that it appears to have been nothing more than a rumour! See this release from IRAC, the price setting body here on PEI.
We're just a bunch of sheep us silly humans.

Oddly enough, my neighbour said exactly the same thing at 8:15 am this morning and I gassed up at 1.04/l. What evil force benefits and how can they spark the same rumour 1600 kms apart.

And for what..? 2-4 dollars savings after the fill up? Not worth the panic. Bicycles people, bicycles!

Cynthia, the rumour was that gas prices would double. That would mean 40-45 dollars savings...that's a little more justifiable for the madness that ensued.

Same rumour hit Sackville today and now the gas stations are out of fuel. I'm driving to Charlottetown tomorrow, so I sure hope there's some gas left on the island.

We had exactly the same situation over here in the UK last week. The fuel shortages became a self-fulfilling prophecy due to everyone panic-buying.
We could only dream of the prices you folks pay though! (currently around $2.50 ltr in $CDN - and thats without a crisis!)

Crazy!
I maintain my stance on bicycles.
