Last night I stumbled upon the Appalachian Mountain Club’s “Mountain Leadership School”. For those of you who are not familiar with the AMC they describe what they do as this:
“The AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Appalachian region.”
While browsing through their Mountain Leadership School site I found this PDF. It is their “Mountain Leadership School - Student Manual”. While a lot of its content has to do with mountain things, like recognizing heatstroke, there is a tremendous amount of general leadership advice in there too. If you’re in a leadership position of a small group this is worth a read.
If you like the AMC’s leadership style then you will probably be well served by their book on outdoor leadership. This book, while full of mountain specific things too, has a tremendous amount of insight into the dynamics and workings of small groups in general.
