It’s a bit of a joke at the office that we all have AADD (Adult Attention Deficit Disorder). Some of you might have seen the recent ads on TV telling us that there is a new wonder drug to take care of our AADD. Some of the symptoms of this disease are these really rare behaviours:
- Disorganization
- Forgetfulness
- Procrastination
I’m not questioning as to whether the disease actually exists or not. It’s quite the opposite. I think diseases, including this one, need to be treated with the respect and attention they deserve. It just seems to me that lately we have been coming up with new diseases (and mass marketing them) that sound a lot like character flaws more than health or mental problems. What is scarier to me is that I hear about the pill to fix it the same time I hear about the disease itself.

Even scarier - the drug ads that don't tell you what the drug is for - just tell you to ask your doctor about them.

From what I remember: If you actually say what a drug is for in an ad (in the US at least), then you have to spend an EQUAL amount of time explaining the side-effects or something like that.

Sounds like they have created a drug to deal with the slacker generation. For a real hoot, there is a diagnostic manual for psycological disorders put out periodically which displays a real pressure to make treatable syndroms out of personality characteristics: I found most of my teen angst is now a mish mash of illnesses.

From what I hear DADD sounds much worse than AADD.
